Saldana plays the main character and has many intense and flashy scenes (especially the musical ones). I am happy that after all these successes she finally got the role where she could show her acting skills. It is kind of a supporting role but still she is the heart of the film and the whole plot revolves around her. Gomez and Paz were good but I am surprised they also won the Palme d’Or – their performances were not as great and memorable as Saldana and Gascon. Jacques Audiard’s vision is bold and impressive.
This film is elegant and looks beautiful. I love the cinematography and the soundtrack. Not everything works perfectly and there were some moments when I was not completely exhausted, but most of the time I was having fun and was amazed by its craziness, ingenuity and originality. I’m not a big fan of musicals, but the musical scenes (of which there aren’t many) in that film are engaging and very well choreographed and fun. It’s a snap that makes them enjoyable to watch. The songs are catchy and memorable (my favorites involve vaginoplasty and the taste of Cola). "Emilia Perez" is not for everyone. Some people walked away, some said it was one of the worst films of the festival, some loved it (me included).
The closest I’ve seen to it is Leos Carax’s "Annette". "Emilia Perez" is a more mainstream-friendly film, but it will still be missed by a lot of people. But I still encourage you to see it. It currently has a 87% on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audience and a 8.2 here. This is definitely one of the best new shows of the year. It takes place in a dystopian future where everyone lives in a huge silo hundreds of stories underground.
They live there with a bunch of rules that they all believe are in place to protect them. It has a star studded cast led by Rebecca Ferguson and supported by Tim Robbins, Shane McRae, Will Patton, Common, Iain Glen, David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones, and more. A new season of "Silo" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
